3 Easy Steps To An Organized Refrigerator

Old Routines & New Beginnings

How was everybody’s summer?  I can’t even believe how fast it went!  For many of you, school started weeks ago, but for us, we’re juuuust getting around to it!  My daughter starts 1st grade this  week, my youngest will pick back up with his speech therapy then too, and my oldest…..well…we’re trying something new around here.

We are home schooling!!!

I can’t even tell you how excited we all are for this new chapter and journey ahead!  While I still have a ways to go with the planning (we made our final decision only a couple weeks ago), I’m doing my best to get things organized around here.

Turning Over the Organizational Leaf Refrigerator-Style

I am not, by nature, a very organized person.  I absolutely missed that gene.  (Let’s just say the struggle is real!)

Still, with home school right around the corner, I think it’s about time I figure this whole “organization thing” out, you know?

I’ve miles to go before I sleep in my someday organized world, but there is one area I feel I have conquered, and it’s a big one!  Want to see?

Guys, meet my refrigerator:

Nothing fancy here, but it is organized & clean, and that’s a HUGE deal for us in this house!

Before, we couldn’t find a thing!  And don’t get me started on the “gross” factor, because it was astronomically high!  The shelves were always caked in unknown substances, and there were far too many containers filled with long since identifiable foods.

Keeping Organization Real

Now, I know lots of people ditch the bags and display the produce, but we aren’t that family.  I love the way it looks in the glass bowls and tidy containers, but it’s just not realistic for this  house.

For us, being real means acknowledging that, while I might have time once to fill all that produce into beautiful bowls, I likely will never have that opportunity twice in a row.  I don’t want that guilt of unrealistic expectations left unmet, you know what I’m saying?!

3 Steps to Clean & Organized

So, how did we go from caked on funk to all clean and tidy?

Honestly, it’s so simple, I can’t even believe I didn’t do this before.

You ready?

Wipe.

Consolidate.

Make it pretty.

I know it may sound over-simplistic, but that really is it!

Wipe

Every time I come home from the grocery store, before I put the milk in the refrigerator, for example, I move all the items in that area to the side and wipe the shelf with a damp paper towel.

Consolidate

After I wipe the shelf, I consolidate the food that is residing there.  This is when the old food gets pitched, or complementary foods get consolidated into one container (got one container with rice and another with beans?  Combine them, and you’ve got yourself a great lunch!)

Make It Pretty

This, to me, is the easiest part.  You’ve wiped.  You’ve consolidated.  Now’s your chance to put everything back in a manageable way that makes sense for your family.  For our house, snack time has me trying my best to push the fruit and yogurt angle over other packaged things.  For that reason, you’ll see the fruit has taken center stage on actually some part of every shelf!  (The yogurt can’t be seen in either picture in this post, but trust me, it’s there at eye level on the door!)

Consider Yourself Organized!

Yup, that’s honestly it!  It’s so simple that I find myself grappling to understand why I didn’t think of this before!  I mean, did everyone else already know about this, and I’m just now catching on?

This has been revolutionary for us (or at least for me. I’m not really sure anyone else has noticed!).  Everywhere I look in our house, I see the evidence of disorganization and chaos.  So, for me to have claimed this one small area is huge.

Hey, who knows, maybe this could be your chance for victory too!

So, go ahead!  Reclaim that refrigerator and be proud!  And, when you do declare victory, be sure to share your before & after photos with me so that we can love and admire them and be proud together!

P.S. Yes, that’s Starbucks, and it’s all we drink! We’ve gone all old school and make it each morning with a percolator….Seriously, SO delicious!  This post contains affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosure here.

I write about my life's core: Jesus & my faith, my family, and the struggles I have met along the way. I figure...I hope...that if exposing my life and it's lessons learned can encourage even one person, this blog and all the hours I have spent behind this computer will have been more than worth it.

  1. Bravo! I’m hyper organized, but I’m not tidy. Isn’t that bizarre? I know where everything is, but I do not have the energy to return my nighttime water glass every day, so there are always like 4 empty glasses by my bed. The shame. So proud of you and your fridge.

    1. I wish I were more organized, but it just isn’t something that comes easily for me whatsoever! The glasses thing reminds me of my son. He’d have an entire cupboard’s worth in there if I let him!
